What to Look for in an AI Keynote Speaker for Business Events

Rob Cressy
TL;DR
  • The best AI keynote speaker for business events talks to your audience as humans first and walks through the tech second.
  • Look for a speaker who teaches how to think with AI, because a mindset sticks long after the feature list goes stale.
  • Live co-creation beats slides. A speaker who builds something real in the room gives your guests a moment they remember.
  • Ask what your guests walk away with. The strongest talks hand the host a follow-up package that keeps the conversation going.

You're planning a business event and you want an AI keynote speaker for business events who will land with your audience. The real question is how to tell a speaker who will connect with your room from one who will lose it early. The answer comes down to four things: a human-first message, a focus on mindset, a live build, and a follow-up your guests can use.

I just did two AI talks back to back for a room of founders, investors, and people who had recently sold their companies. The host gave me one directive: make this beginner level. Near the end of the first talk, one attendee raised a hand and said, "Rob, I've been in two AI talks this month, and they were both super technical, and this is the first one that talked to me like a human." That one sentence is the whole buyer's guide.

What should you look for in an AI keynote speaker for business events?

Look for someone who meets your audience where they are.

Most AI talks right now are a tour of what's under the hood. Plugins, connectors, projects, the new feature that replaced last month's feature. It goes right over everybody's head.

Your guests run companies. They want to know what AI means for how they lead, decide, and grow, and whether they should learn AI themselves or delegate it. A great speaker translates the technology into that language.

Here's a simple test. Ask the speaker how they'd adjust the talk for a room that barely uses AI today. If the answer is "I'd slow down the demo," keep looking. If the answer starts with the people in the room, you're close.

Why does a human-first message matter for an AI keynote?

Because the people in your audience are the ones who have to change.

I opened both talks the same way. Right out of the gate: your number one key to success in AI is caring the most. Then the next beat: everything you need to be great with AI is already inside of you right now.

That framing gives people permission to lean in. It's the heart of how to stay human while using AI, and it's what a business audience needs to hear first. It tells a room full of accomplished leaders that the skills that built their business are the same skills that make them great with AI.

In my second talk, an attendee running a nine-figure business came up after and said, "I can't believe you just did this entire thing on thinking and mindset for AI." The person with the most at stake in that room heard exactly what they needed to hear. The mindset shifts that matter for entrepreneurs using AI are the content. The tools are the examples.

How technical should an AI keynote speaker be for a business audience?

Technical enough to build something live. Plain-spoken enough that nobody feels lost.

Here's what the room looked like when I asked for a show of hands. Across roughly 46 people, two were using Claude Code or Codex. Zero were using personal AI agents. These were people worth nine figures.

That's normal. A recent report showed 98% of US households aren't paying for AI yet. Your audience is likely somewhere near the start of the curve, no matter how successful they are.

So the speaker's job is to make AI feel possible. I tell rooms that I'm the least qualified AI speaker in the world. I have zero AI background, zero tech background, and zero coding background. Except for one thing. I've used it every day since the first week it came out. That story builds trust faster than any jargon could.

What makes a live AI demo work at a business event?

A live build works when it lands early enough to become the centerpiece.

I had no slides at either talk. Just my computer, sharing my screen and co-creating with the room. We built a business concept together in real time, then turned it into a full website.

And I learned a lesson the hard way. In the first talk, I packed the website build at the very end. It wasn't done when the talk was over. So in the second talk, I moved the build way up. Once the site was live, we kept going and created a 15-second marketing video for the brand we'd just made.

The shift from watching to creating is where the room comes alive. When you vet speakers, ask how and when they build live. If the demo sits at the very end, it's at risk of getting cut short.

What should guests walk away with after an AI keynote?

Something they can open on Monday morning.

The host at my event ran the sign-in sheet. On Monday they sent a personal follow-up to every guest with the website we built, the marketing video, an image we generated, and a resource from me through a custom URL made just for that room.

This is how the host gets the credit. Bringing in an AI speaker becomes part of the concierge experience they're known for, and the follow-up proves it happened.

Before you book, ask the speaker: what will my guests have in their inbox the next day?

How do you know an AI keynote speaker for business events is the right fit?

Watch how they talk about people.

The right speaker is proud of the audience's progress and respectful of where they are today. They answer questions with stories from their own work. They make it clear that AI is a tool for growing a business, and the business stays the point.

You can hear it in the questions they ask you before the event. Who's in the room? What are they worried about? What would make this a win for you as the host?

How do you choose an AI keynote speaker for your event?

  1. Ask how they'll meet your audience's level. Listen for the people before the tools.
  2. Ask what the core message is. Mindset and human-first thinking travel further than any feature.
  3. Ask if they build live, and when. Early in the talk is the sweet spot.
  4. Ask what the follow-up looks like. Your guests should have something useful in their inbox the next day.
  5. Ask for a story from a recent room. The way they describe an audience tells you how they'll treat yours.

The best AI talk your guests will ever hear is the one that makes them feel capable. The right AI keynote speaker for business events leaves your room believing they can do this, and then shows them how.
