How to Start Before You Have Certainty (The Zero to One Is Where the Joy Is)

Rob Cressy
TL;DR
  • How to start before you have certainty comes down to accepting that the certainty you are waiting for only arrives after you move, never before.
  • Most people stop at zero, trying to logic their way to certainty before they take the first step.
  • The zero to one is where the joy is. Going from nothing to something is the part that feels alive, and it is the part people skip while they plan.
  • A vision is fuel to get you moving. It was never the destination.

If you have been sitting on something for months, running it through your head, waiting to feel sure, the question you are actually asking is how to start before you have certainty. The honest answer is that certainty is downstream of action. You get it by moving, which means the sureness you are waiting on is not coming until after you begin.

I got hit with this on a coaching call this week, in the seat receiving rather than giving. I was talking through some things I have been circling for a while, and a coach I work with named what was happening. The glimpse had already come. I had seen the thing. And then I kept thinking about it instead of getting on it. Their phrase for the fix was to surrender to the insight, and it has not left me since.

Why Is It So Hard to Start Before You Have Certainty?

Because thinking feels productive and moving feels risky, so the mind picks thinking every time.

The pattern we named on that call is that most people stop at zero, trying to logic their way to certainty before moving. It looks like diligence. You are researching, you are planning, you are getting clear. What you are actually doing is staying somewhere safe where nothing can go wrong yet.

The delay is the smaller cost. The bigger one is that you never get to the part that feels good. The zero to one is where the joy is. That moment where a thing did not exist and now it does is the whole reward, and it only shows up on the other side of starting. Everything before it is preparation dressed as progress.

How Do You Act on an Insight Instead of Overthinking It?

It means treating the glimpse as instruction rather than as a hypothesis to keep testing.

You get a flash of what you should do. The move is to act on it immediately rather than thinking it over one more time. The coach I was talking to arrived at that phrase after cycling through a few versions, surrender to the action, then to the flow, then to the resistance, then to the pull, before landing on the insight. The precision matters. The thing you surrender to is the flash of knowing, not the plan you build afterward.

They told me a story that made it concrete. They went hiking in Scotland expecting to reach a particular waterfall. They never got the waterfall. What they got instead was an unplanned river crossing and an adventure they would not have gone looking for. The waterfall did its job anyway, because the waterfall was the reason they left the house.

That reframes what a vision is for. Your vivid vision is the waterfall. It exists to get you moving. The real experience unfolds in the surrender, in whatever actually shows up once you are out there.

How Do You Start Before You Have Certainty When the Outcome Is Unclear?

Adopt the identity first, then let the actions follow it.

The same call had a live example running the other direction. The coach I was talking with is exploring a new field, a trade they have never worked in professionally, and they were doing all the sensible early things. Researching the marketplace. Setting up a profile. Studying how it works.

My counsel was that the people who succeed in that world commit to the process rather than to the desire. Wanting it is common. Committing is rare. So the move is to take the identity on now, today, before you have any evidence for it. Say I am the best in the world at this, and I want to get my first one on the board. Then go get the first one.

I had some standing in that conversation, because I trained in voiceover at Second City years ago and voiced a motivational video that reached around three million views. I also still have pitch notes I wrote back in 2016 for that same kind of work, and I pulled them up on the call. Written years ago, still notes today. That is what waiting for certainty tends to produce. If you need a smaller entry point than a whole identity, the first step to growth is usually smaller than the one you are imagining.

Is a Clear Vision Required Before You Begin?

A vision helps you aim. It was never a prerequisite for moving.

The trap is treating the vision as a gate. People decide they cannot start until the picture is complete, then spend a year refining the picture. Meanwhile the picture was only ever fuel.

Here is a check I have been running on myself. What if you did not do anything you did not want to do for a month? I got handed a version of that challenge on a previous call, to let go of all my systems for one week and just be guided. I stayed in that mode for a full month. What I learned is that the structure I thought was holding everything together was partly holding me in place, and that staying in action matters more than staying in control.

How Do You Stop Comparing Yourself to a Future Version of You?

By noticing that the comparison is manufactured and that it does not resolve at any level of success.

On that call, my coach offered something that stopped me. Both of us are already whole, complete, perfect expressions of infinite potential right now, and the dissatisfaction we feel comes entirely from measuring our present expression against an imagined future one. The gap is real to us. It is also self-created.

We tested it honestly and agreed the self-judgment would intensify with ten million dollars in the bank rather than dissolve. There is no number that fixes it, which means the fix has to be a decision instead. Mine came out as a sentence on that call. I will never be happier than I am in this moment.

There is also a mechanical reason to stop reaching so far. A performance coach I follow uses a weightlifting analogy for this: from two hundred pounds you can see two forty-five, and you cannot see four hundred. You only get to see the next level from where you are standing. That is an argument for taking the next step rather than waiting until the whole staircase is visible, and it is the same posture that keeps you steady when things go sideways.

What Changes When You Start Before You Have Certainty?

You stop negotiating and you start accumulating evidence.

The anchor phrase that came out of that call for me was this: I create every day, and I create everything I want in my life. It landed without any judgment attached, which is the part that surprised me. It reads as a description of how you already operate, available today, rather than a goal sitting out in front of you.

Once creating is what you do daily, the question of whether you are ready stops being interesting. You are not auditioning for the life anymore. You are running it. And the compounding works the same way whether you are building a personal practice or a business, which is why personal development and business growth move together rather than in sequence.

Your Next Three Steps

  1. Name the insight you have already had. You almost certainly have one you have been circling. Write it in one sentence, without qualifiers.
  2. Take the identity today. Say the sentence about who you are in that thing out loud, before you have any proof. Proof is what you are about to go get.
  3. Do the smallest version this week. Get one on the board. One published thing, one call made, one draft finished. The joy lives in that gap between zero and one, and you cannot feel it from the planning side.

The Part Worth Remembering

The waterfall gets you out of the house. The adventure happens on the way.

Stop thinking after the glimpse. Get on the magic carpet and see where it goes.
