- How to get started with ChatGPT as a business owner comes down to your inputs and your reps. Your lack of a tech background is an advantage.
- Use a simple three-part menu for what to type: what's alive in you, your goals, and your friction.
- Commit to your first 20 hours. Experience teaches you more than theory ever will.
- Treat ChatGPT like an employee, ask it to find your blind spots, and ship something real every time you use it.
If you're figuring out how to get started with ChatGPT as a business owner, you're probably stuck on two questions. What do I actually type? How do I know I'm doing it right? The short answer: start with what you already know about your business, put in your first 20 hours, and use every session to build something you'll actually use.
I remember the exact moment I got hooked. A friend texted me, "Check out this site called ChatGPT." I clicked on it, and within the first minute I felt like I was using the internet for the first time.
By day five I was all in. I had no AI background. I had no tech background. I'm not a coder. What I did have was a goal, and that goal was business growth.
That focus matters more than anything else in this post.
People would tell me, "It said George Washington went to the moon." My answer was always the same. That's irrelevant. How is that going to help me grow my business?
How to Get Started With ChatGPT as a Business Owner When You Have No Tech Background?
See your lack of a technical background as the advantage.
Think about the last time you had a conversation with someone in a tech department. Usually they speak one language and everybody else speaks another. ChatGPT speaks yours. It responds to plain, human language, which means the business owner who knows their customers, their offers, and their story is already holding the most valuable thing in the conversation.
Everything you need to succeed with AI is already inside of you. Success comes from the inputs you bring.
Your years of experience, your mindset, your habits, the way you serve your clients. That's the raw material. You just put it in there.
What stops most people is fear. The judgments, the self-limiting beliefs, the "I don't have a tech background." Throw that in the trash and get in the game.
What Should a Business Owner Type Into ChatGPT First?
When someone feels stuck on what to put into ChatGPT, I give them a simple menu with three options.
- What's alive in me right now? Type in whatever is on your mind today.
- What are my dreams, goals, or vision? Put in where you want to go.
- What are my challenges, pain points, or friction? Put in the stuff that sucks right now.
Alive, goals, challenges. Pick one and start building. It can be that simple because it is that simple.
One of my one-on-one clients told me that every one of our sessions started with the same question from me: "What do you want to create today?" That question cuts through the noise. You walk in with an outcome, so ChatGPT has something real to work on.
In one session, they wanted to fix a problem with their meeting notes. Their AI note takers were scattered across different platforms and nothing lived in one place. The goal was a single document they could use as their central source, and by the end of that hour they had a recording of me walking them through it, point and click. That's what getting started looks like. One real problem, worked on in your own business.
How Many Hours Does It Take to Get Good at ChatGPT?
Most people are sitting at zero. If that's you, your goal is simple. Get in your first 20 hours.
The one word that is the key to all success in AI is experience. You will learn more from doing than you will from theory.
Think about how you teach a kid to ride a bike. You buy the bike. You put on training wheels. They ride with the training wheels. Then you take them off, and a year later they're popping wheelies.
ChatGPT works the same way. The more you see, the more you can see. Once you experience one light bulb moment, you want another one, and that's when you catch what I call the bug.
Consistency is what gets you there. There's a book that changed my life called The Power of Consistency, and the idea is simple. Most people look at their goals once a year. The best in the world look at them every day. The same is true with growth and AI. Daily reps compound, which is why I tell founders to build an AI habit with no zero days.
How Do You Get Better Answers From ChatGPT for Your Business?
Most people use ChatGPT like Google. They ask a question, get an answer, and move on. Then it sounds like a robot and they decide it doesn't work.
Talk to ChatGPT like an employee instead.
You're the boss. It's your assistant. Give it the goal, give it the context, and tell it what you want. If it comes back with something you don't like, iterate. When it gives me something I like, my first line is almost always "Great, speaking out loud." The "great" tells it we're on the right path, and "speaking out loud" tells it I'm taking what's in my head and putting it on the page.
Then add two of the most valuable prompts I have.
"What is the hidden and non-obvious?" Use this on anything you're working on. If you could see it, you'd already be doing it. This prompt helps you see what you can't see.
"Act as my world-class editor. Does this work? Why or why not?" There is more value in the why not than the why. If ChatGPT keeps flattering you and telling you everything is amazing, this is the fix. You're asking it to be your critical friend, because you want to know the holes in your boat.
When you don't know something, that's your cue to ask. See a new AI update on social media and feel overwhelmed? Take a screenshot, drop it in, and say: "I know nothing about this. Make it simple and easy for me to understand. How does it apply to me, my business, and my clients?"
I don't know becomes the trigger for putting it into ChatGPT. If you're brand new, my ChatGPT for beginners guide walks through the basics.
How Do You Use ChatGPT to Build Systems for Your Business?
Once you have some reps, the real level up is systems thinking. Systems scale.
ChatGPT can write you an email or build you a rocket ship to the moon. Everything in between is capacity. So instead of writing one email, think about the system for creating endless emails.
Take a simple example from social media marketing. You can use ChatGPT to write one LinkedIn post. Or you can step back and ask the bigger question. What is my content strategy for the year on LinkedIn? Am I committed to one post a day? What are my content buckets?
Then put it right into ChatGPT: "I heard that systems thinking is important for content marketing. Help me build out a simple and easy content strategy that me and my team can execute over the next 90 days in bullet points."
Now you're designing the thing that executes the small stuff, and consistency does the rest. I spent years hearing mentors say "systems scale" before I built my first one. If that's you, becoming a systems thinker starts with one repeatable process.
The same principle opens up every other tool. Want an image or a video from an AI tool you've never touched? Ask ChatGPT to write the prompt for you, then copy and paste it. The client I coached called this mind-blowing. They thought they had to stay inside one app. ChatGPT can help you use almost anything.
What Mistakes Should You Avoid When Learning How to Get Started With ChatGPT as a Business Owner?
The biggest mistake is treating AI as a parking lot.
You have a great conversation, you get excited, you close the tab, and nothing happens. Cool, cool, cool. Nothing shipped.
You only grow when you ship the work. I can teach you how to think in AI and how to think in systems, but if you're not doing the work, none of it matters.
That client said this was the line that landed for them. They were having so much fun creating projects and asking questions, and at the end of the day they still had to ship the work. They also realized they'd been playing small. The things they used ChatGPT for were elementary because they weren't asking the right questions. Once they got clear on what they wanted to build, they started creating things and using them in their life.
The other mistake is waiting for certainty. Uncertainty leads to inaction. If you don't know what to do, you'll likely do nothing. You get certainty by doing, which is why I'm a big believer in starting before you have certainty.
What Are the First Steps to Take With ChatGPT This Week?

- Talk to it like an employee. Goal, context, what you want, then iterate.
- Run the two power prompts. "What is the hidden and non-obvious?" and "Does this work? Why or why not?"
- Turn one task into a system. Pick something you repeat every week and ask ChatGPT to help you design the process.
- Ship one thing. A post, a workflow, an email sequence. Something real that leaves the chat.
This is the best time in history to make your dreams come true, and you already have what you need to start.
Your experience is the input. ChatGPT is the bridge. Your first 20 hours are the price of admission.
Open a new chat today, ask yourself what you want to create, and ship it.
