How to Build Confidence With AI as a Leader

Rob Cressy
TL;DR
  • Confidence with AI gets built through reps, not readiness. You do one thing, it works, and your standard rises.
  • "I am overwhelmed" is an identity statement. Change that sentence and you change what you are willing to attempt.
  • The fastest progression I have watched went from sitting in a keynote audience to speaking about AI at that same conference a year later, in a two week turnaround.
  • Leaders carry a second job here. Your team inherits your relationship with AI, so removing overwhelm from the people you lead is part of the work.

If you are asking how to build confidence with AI as a leader, you already have enough information. What you are short on is reps. Confidence with AI gets built the same way confidence in anything else gets built, by doing one thing, watching it work, and letting your standard rise from there.

Here is the evidence. Last year I gave the opening keynote on AI for a professional association. Someone in the audience that day was barely using AI at all and knew she needed to learn it for her field. She did every single thing I said while she was still sitting in the room. When I turned that keynote into a monthly masterclass, she joined and implemented at the speed I brought it. By March it clicked. A few months after that, the same organization asked her to be the AI speaker for their conference, and she turned it around in two weeks. She now runs six AI employees inside a business she used to run by hand. She never got more ready. She got more reps.

What Does It Mean to Build Confidence With AI as a Leader?

Confidence with AI as a leader means you trust yourself to figure out the next thing, whatever the next thing turns out to be.

That matters because the tools change weekly. One of the members in my group put it plainly on a recent call. It is wild how fast it changes, every single week, and when you wrap your brain around it and move with it, it is amazing. If your confidence is attached to knowing a specific tool, it evaporates every time the tool updates. If your confidence is attached to your own ability to take one action and learn from it, it compounds instead.

This is why I treat AI confidence as an identity question before it is a skill question. The skill follows the identity. Teaching a client the mechanics of a tool takes an hour. Getting someone to believe they are the kind of person who builds with AI is the part that changes their year.

Why Do Capable Leaders Still Feel Overwhelmed by AI?

Because they are measuring the gap between what they want to build and the time they have to build it, and they are calling that gap overwhelm.

A new member opened a call recently by telling me she was overwhelmed. My answer was the same one I give every time. Are you overwhelmed at the number of birthday presents you get? No. You take one at a time. The volume was never the problem. The story about the volume was the problem.

Then I said the part that actually matters. "I am overwhelmed" is an identity statement. You will never hear me say it, because it does not align with the identity I hold as a high performer. I cannot operate as overwhelmed and be the leader of all these people at the same time.

She caught it immediately and said she should never say that, because it is not overwhelming, it is exciting. Notice she said excited. Abracadabra, I create as I speak. The words came first and the feeling followed, which is the same order it works in every time.

If that idea lands for you, the way you talk about your identity is worth auditing before you audit your tool stack.

How to Build Confidence With AI as a Leader Without a Technical Background

Stack ones over zeros.

That is the whole method. One thing done is a one. One thing considered, researched, and left undone is a zero. You do one thing at a time, you focus on execution, and your standard rises as you take action. There is no version of this where you think your way to confidence and then start.

A practical shape for that: pick one repeatable task you already do every week, and hand exactly that task to AI. One of the founders I coach runs an operations heavy business and gets buried in monthly reporting. The reports go out, the phones light up, because the people receiving them cannot read a technical one page financial statement. He built one thing that takes the technical report and returns plain English, written for someone with no background in the field. That single build is going to hand his team back thirty to forty hours.

He did not need a technical background. He needed one clearly defined job and a willingness to run at it. If you want a structure for turning that into a habit rather than a one off, I wrote about building a daily AI practice separately.

How to Build Confidence With AI as a Leader in Your First 30 Days

Faster than most leaders expect, and it moves in steps rather than a slope.

The member I described above was barely using AI, then implemented steadily, then hit a point in March where it got clear and became a creative outlet for her. The clarity arrived after the reps, which is the sequence almost everyone has backwards. Another member woke up one morning to an automated dashboard showing the eight metrics that changed since yesterday, and told the group that thirty days earlier he would not have believed it was possible for him.

Thirty days is a real unit of time here. It is long enough to build something that works and short enough that you cannot spend it planning. That is why I ask everyone in my group the same question on a rolling basis: what does being undeniable with AI look like for you in the next thirty days? People who answer that question out loud tend to ship. People who keep it in their head tend to research.

If you are earlier than that and the block feels like self doubt rather than time, AI imposter syndrome is worth reading first.

How Do I Keep My Team From Feeling Overwhelmed by AI?

Remove the overwhelm from your own language first, because your team is reading you before they read the rollout plan.

As coaches, creators, and business leaders, our job is to remove overwhelm from the people we lead. In AI, you already know what is coming. Not enough time is going to be a thing. Every reason why not is going to be a thing. The question worth answering is how you avoid living in overwhelm when everywhere you look could justify it.

The leader who says "I am overwhelmed" in a team meeting has just given everyone in that room permission to be overwhelmed too. The leader who says "we are going to take one thing at a time and get a win this week" has set a completely different ceiling. Same workload, different standard.

There is a bigger version of this that goes past AI, which is staying human while you use AI in a business full of people who are watching how you handle it.

What Should I Do First If I Want to Feel Confident Using AI?

Take the picture and call it day one.

When I gave that keynote, the line I gave the room was to take a picture, because this is your day one. The person who did it turned a photo into a marker she could measure from. A year later she was the one on stage.

So do the equivalent. Name today as day one, pick the single most annoying repeatable task in your week, and hand it to AI before you close your laptop tonight. Then do it again tomorrow. Confidence shows up somewhere around the fourth or fifth time it works, and it never shows up before the first.

Your Actionable Steps

  1. Audit your language for a week. Every time you catch yourself saying "I am overwhelmed," swap it for what is actually true, which is usually "I am excited and I have not sequenced this yet."
  2. Name today as day one and mark it somewhere you will see again.
  3. Pick one repeatable weekly task. One. Hand it to AI today.
  4. Stack ones over zeros for thirty days. A one is a thing you finished. A zero is a thing you researched.
  5. Answer this out loud to someone who will hold you to it: what does being undeniable with AI look like for me in the next thirty days?
  6. Watch your own language in front of your team. They inherit your relationship with this.

The Real Answer

Every leader I have watched build genuine confidence with AI got there the same way. They stopped waiting to feel ready, they did one thing, it worked, and their standard rose. Then they did it again.

The identity comes first, the reps confirm it, and the confidence is what is left over after the reps. You can start that today with one task and one sentence you refuse to say about yourself anymore.

Want the Roadmap Instead of the Guesswork?

UNDENIABLE is the group where business leaders build this in real time, with the roadmap, the standards, and a room of people doing it alongside you. If you want to compress the year it takes to figure this out alone, that is the room to be in.
