Where Confidence Actually Comes From (And How to Build It Every Day)

Rob Cressy
TL;DR
  • Where does confidence come from? Your work ethic and your consistency, not your wins. Confidence is the residue of your reps.
  • No zero days, and no two bad days in a row. Even two minutes counts. Apply it per area of your life, not just to the day overall.
  • Switch from "need to" to "get to." Your get-to list shows your ownership, and a small inch there has massive impact.
  • The two things no one can ever take from you are what you learn and your mindset. Build a morning routine around them and you are better today than yesterday by design.

Where does confidence come from? Most people think it comes from winning, from the trophy, from the close, from the moment everything finally goes right. That is backwards. Confidence comes from your work ethic and your consistency, the reps you stack every single day before anyone is watching. Within the next two sentences you will know exactly what this post answers, so here it is. The wins are nice, and the wins are not the source. The source is what you do daily when no result is guaranteed.

Jalen Brunson said it best. After the New York Knicks made their run and he got asked about staying composed under that kind of pressure, his answer was four words. "My confidence comes from my work ethic." He did the reps for decades. He showed up in empty gyms for years before any camera cared. That is the whole secret. Confidence is not a feeling you wait for. It is the residue of your reps.

Let me show you where this actually comes from and how you build it every morning.

Where does confidence come from?

Where does confidence come from? It comes from your work ethic, plain and simple. It is the trust you have earned with yourself by showing up over and over again.

Think about why Brunson could stay calm with the whole season on the line. He had already done the work ten thousand times in private. The free throw at the buzzer was just another rep. When you have put in the reps, the big moment feels familiar, because your body and your mind have already been there.

Here is the part that frees people up. Your work ethic does not have to be shoveling rocks. It can be reading. It can be walking. It can be meditating. It can be the things you actually love. The work that builds confidence is the consistent work, and it gets to be work that lights you up.

Why doesn't confidence come from winning?

Outcomes are a terrible foundation because you do not fully control them. You can do everything right and still lose the deal, miss the shot, get the no. If your confidence is built on results, every loss cracks it.

When I started 16 years ago in Chicago, I had no clients and no revenue, chasing this dream of getting paid to talk about sports. If I had measured myself by money in those early days, I would have quit in a month. The outcomes were not there yet.

So I stopped making money the number one metric. I realized the two things no one can ever take from me are what I learn and my mindset. I could control those every single day, win or lose. That is when confidence stopped being fragile, because I anchored it to something I owned instead of something I hoped for. This is the same reason a powerful personal identity beats chasing approval. You build it from the inside.

How does your work ethic create confidence?

Every rep is a deposit. You make a promise to yourself, you keep it, and your self-trust grows a little. Do that for a week and you feel it. Do it for a year and you are a different person.

I lived this on 75 Hard. Day 23 was Memorial Day weekend in Orlando. Everyone was heading to boat parties to drink all day in the sun, and I did two workouts and ate chicken. It sucked in the moment. I got through it anyway. And here is what came out of that grind I did not expect. Years later someone told me they discovered me because of it. They had never even spoken to me. They just watched me finish and thought, if he can finish that, I can finish my thing.

That is the residue of reps showing up twice. It built my confidence, and it gave someone else permission to build theirs. The full version of that grind lives in my 75 Hard success story if you want the whole picture.

What is the no zero days rule?

A zero day is a day you grew nothing, shared nothing, moved nothing forward. The rule is simple. No zero days, and no two bad days in a row.

The beauty is in how low the bar can be. Sick in bed? You can still read for two minutes. That counts. The point is the chain stays alive. You protect the streak of being someone who shows up.

Run this per bucket, not just for the day overall. Fitness is a bucket. Learning is a bucket. Whatever matters to you is a bucket. If you miss a bucket today, tomorrow that bucket is locked, no excuses. Miss two days in a row in any area and you are sliding. The standard compounds, and over time it stops being something you do and becomes who you are.

I coach a team where this lives in real life. One guy worked out and walked at 8pm one night because his accountability partners held him to it. Once he did it, every future excuse died. As I told him, once you did it, the hard part is over. No one has ever finished a workout and said, ah, I wish I had not done that.

How do you build confidence every day?

You build it by removing the excuse before the excuse can show up.

Someone on the team I coach wanted to be outside 20 minutes a day, and rain kept becoming the reason he skipped. So he bought the best rain jacket he could find. Now there is no excuse. The obstacle is gone. That is a small inch with massive impact. When you remove the obstacle, you remove the negotiation, and the rep just happens.

The other move is the language. Throw "need to" in the trash and switch to "get to." You do not need to work out. You get to. You do not need to build your business. You get to. Your to-do list grows forever and drains you. Your get-to-do list shows your ownership and fills you up. I went deep on the daily side of this in how to create a morning routine you love, because the routine is where the get-to mindset becomes a habit.

What daily routine builds lasting confidence?

Where real confidence comes from over the long haul is one routine you keep no matter what. For me it is a one to two hour morning routine I have run for 16 years straight, built on reading first thing.

Here is why that one habit is so powerful. If you build a reading routine first thing every morning, you have guaranteed you are better today than yesterday by design. You do not hope to grow. You engineer it.

Find your version with the 10X question. If the house were empty and the whole day were yours, what is the one thing you would do that you love? That is your daily vitamin. Give yourself permission to do it every single day and take "no" off the table by making it a non-negotiable. When you decide in advance, you stop spending willpower on the decision and start spending it on the doing. That is also how you speak things into existence. You name the standard, then you live it.

What to start tomorrow morning

  1. Pick your buckets. Name 2-3 areas that matter most (fitness, learning, business, relationships). These are where you run no zero days.
  2. Set the floor stupid low. Two minutes of reading. One lap around the block. The floor exists so the chain never breaks, even on your worst day.
  3. Ask the 10X question. If the day were fully yours, what is the one thing you love doing? Make that your daily vitamin and take "no" off the table.
  4. Remove one excuse today. Buy the rain jacket. Lay out the clothes. Put the book on your pillow. Kill the obstacle before it kills the rep.
  5. Rewrite your list. Cross out "need to" and write "get to." Read it back. Feel the difference.
  6. Do the hard thing early. Once it is done, the hard part is over, and your excuses for the rest of the day are dead.

Close

Confidence is a thing you build, one kept promise at a time. Where does confidence come from? It comes from the reps no one sees, the buckets you protect, the mornings you show up when it would be easier not to. Stack enough of those and you become someone who walks into the big moment already trusting himself, because he has been here ten thousand times in private.

You do not need to do any of this. You get to. Start tomorrow morning. Keep the chain alive. Watch who you become.
