The Secret to Self Improvement: 7 Steps to a Better You

Self improvement is a lifelong journey. It’s not something you can do once and be done with. It’s a lifestyle and way of being. There are many ways you can grow and improve. If you want to experience the best version of yourself, you’ll need to take action. Here are seven steps that will help you become a better you.

Cultivate a positive mindset

What helps you accomplish your goals and get you to where you want to go faster: positivity or negativity? Positivity, of course. Since that’s the case then negativity has no place in your life. It does not serve you and it holds you back from where you want to go. When you cultivate a positive mindset you choose to focus on the positives and the possibilities that surround you. The key word in this is CHOOSE. You get to choose how you respond in every situation and how you experience the world. When you choose to cultivate a positive mindset you’ll become happier, others will be attracted to you, and you’ll become a better person.  

Always be learning

When I started my entrepreneurial journey I audited the success habits of the most successful people in the world. The CEO’s and people I aspired to do things like. I heard numerous times “the average CEO reads 60 books a year”. I looked at my personal development and at that time I was reading zero books a year. This became a major turning point in my self improvement as it was the moment I decided to change and adopt a growth mindset. I knew the one thing no one could ever take from me is what I learned. Because of this I created a reading routine and started reading 30 minutes in the morning every day. The best way to ensure that today is better than yesterday is by learning something new. When you learn something new by design you get better. Rinse and repeat for success.

Make time not excuses

We all have 24 hours in a day yet some people are able to make time to work on their self improvement while others create excuses for why it doesn’t happen. One of my favorite quotes is, “if something is important enough you’ll find time to make it happen.” Is becoming a better version of yourself and living a happier, more fulfilled life important to you? If so then you’ll make time to do the things that will contribute to your personal growth. Excuses aren’t going to get you to where you want to go. Excuses aren’t going to make you better. Making time to work on your self improvement will.

Be intentional

“Live by design, not by default.” This is a quote my branding coach taught me and it’s stuck with me ever since. What it means to me is to be intentional about everything I do. Don’t be like the majority of the world that lives their life on autopilot. Be the architect and create the world you play in. This applies to all areas of your life and everything you do. If you are going to do something then do it with intention. Don’t mail it in. Because when you are intentional about things you get better results, and that creates a better you. 

Take consistent action

Action is the foundation for any path of growth. The more consistent your action the more growth and results you’ll see. Rinse and repeat across every area of your life that you want to improve. When you adopt an action oriented mindset things begin to happen faster and in more quantities. The better your actions, the better you become.

Practice gratitude

Think about all the things you have to be grateful for. Now take it a step further and write it down. After that make it a practice to read that list every single day. What do you think the results would be in your life if you did that? When you live from a place of gratitude you live a more positive life. You are happier and appreciate what you have. This also helps set the intention for having a positive mindset, which will distance yourself from negativity and help you create more positive flow.

Live in the present

One of my favorite books is The Obstacle Is The Way by Ryan Holiday and in it he says, “focus on the moment, not the monsters that may or may not lie ahead.” Instead of living in the past or worrying about the future, learn to live in the present. This is something we often forget, but it becomes easier the more we practice and remind ourselves of it. When you combine this with having a positive mindset, being grateful, intentional, and taking action then your day will go by much more smoothly and productively. Remember: this is just a moment in your life, not your entire life. Do what you can right now.

The key is being intentional about your self improvement, and coming at it from a place of positivity and consistent action. When you do you’ll become a better version of yourself and happier in the process.
